An Evesham police officer is being called a hero after making a daring rescue during a house fire last week on Sagemore Drive.

Video footage shows officer Kevin Long first saving an elderly woman before searching the house for other potential victims. Long then found another resident while walking through smoke. Long pulled the man to safety before collapsing in the grass outside the home.

Authorities say Evesham fire officials arrived on the scene where smoke showed from the front door of the apartment. They say the fire was contained to the kitchen and further damage was prevented to the five adjoining apartments. Those families were able to later return to their units.

According to authorities, two residents were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to be OK. Officer Long suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital. He was released shortly after.

Long was presented a commendation for his actions on June 16.

The fire is under investigation by the Evesham Fire Marshal’s Office and Evesham Police Department.
