The first person to die of swine flu in New Jersey was a church pastor who may have interacted with individuals that traveled to Mexico.
Michael Reiser, 49, died Saturday. He first reported symptoms May 30 and was hospitalized June 2. Reiser was a pastor at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Sterling. In his duties, Reiser assisted clergy with church programs.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is located next to the parish. School officials are telling parents that information will be sent home about the situation. The decision to keep students out of school will then be left up to parents, according to the school.
The archdiocese has confirmed that at least two clergy members traveled to Mexico a month ago. However, nobody else has shown symptoms of swine flu.
