Elmwood Park fatal house fire not suspicious, officials say

A fatal house fire that killed a 59‑year‑old man last week was not suspicious, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Police and firefighters responded to a two‑alarm fire on Market Street at about 2:02 p.m. Friday, May 1. First responders found two victims while fighting the fire.

Shawn Torres, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene. An adult woman sustained burn injuries but survived, officials said.

Investigators from the Prosecutor’s Office, Elmwood Park police, the fire department and the fire prevention bureau determined the fire was not suspicious.
