(11/01/05) ELIZABETH ? Elizabeth Councilman Bob Jaspan called for the resignation of Police Director James Cosgrove Tuesday in the wake of department misconduct accusations.
Jaspan?s demand takes place five days after the News 12 New Jersey I-Team released undercover video of what appears to be a destructive police beer bash. In the video, officers can be seen drinking in a parking garage near police headquarters and bragging about bullying local businesses. Another officer apparently uses an object to destroy a municipal vehicle in the video.
Jaspan says the director knew of the garage gatherings for months, but failed to stop the parties. Both Cosgrove and Mayor Bollwage did not return phone calls about the subject. Sources tell News 12 New Jersey one suspended officer, Lieutenant James Kearns, has been hit with administrative charges of damage to government property and conduct unbecoming an officer.
