Edward Caban was named the next police commissioner for New York City's Finest.
Caban has been acting commissioner since Keechant Sewell resigned last month.
Mayor Eric Adams made the announcement Monday morning outside the 40th Precinct in the Bronx where Caban started his career in 1991. Caban’s father and three brothers were also members of the NYPD.
The Legal Aid Society released a statement following the announcement, saying policing in the city is in need of reform. They added Caban has significant inroads to make with the public to ensure trust with the department.
He grew up in the Bronx and has a career spanning over 30 years, most recently holding the position of first deputy commissioner.
The husband and father of two children became the city's first Hispanic to lead the NYPD.
Mayor Adams also announced the appointment of the first woman of color, Tania Kinsella, as deputy commissioner.
