The mayor of Edison and the town’s fire department are warning the public about the dangers of fireworks after several fires broke out during Diwali celebrations.

The warning comes following a fire on Fishel Road Monday night, while the homeowners were celebrating the Hindu holiday. Luckily, no one was hurt.

According to Mayor Sam Joshi, there were over 40 calls to the fire department in Edison on Monday, which resulted in seven fires. The mayor is calling the volume of calls on Monday far worse than in previous years.

He says that people need to know how to properly dispose of fireworks.

“People need to soak them in water and wait a good amount of time before disposing of them,” Joshi said.

As an alternative to lighting fireworks at home, the township is inviting people to celebrate the festival at the municipal complex from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. this weekend.
