The eastbound commute on Route 78 Monday was a smooth ride for drivers despite the closed express lanes.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) closed the eastbound express lanes from exit 48 to 52 as part of a $42 million construction project. The westbound express lanes are expected to be closed Saturday. While many expected immediate delays, the New Jersey transportation commissioner says things are running smoothly.
Crews plan to work 16 hours a day through December. DOT officials say the department will save time and money with the full closure of the express lanes throughout the project. The repairs are expected to last 30 years.
