A drug suspect was killed and another was critically injured after a police chase in Newark ended in a crash Tuesday.
Authorities say the two suspects fled in a Nissan 300Z after officers observed them in what appeared to be a drug transaction at the Bradley Court Housing Complex. The crash occurred at the intersection of Tremont Avenue and Cedar Street. According to police, the suspects? vehicle was speeding down Tremont Avenue when it crashed into an Essex County transportation van and then smacked into a building.
The passenger in the Nissan, Michael Castellano, of Belleville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, identified as Michael Carlucci, of Belleville, was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment. He is listed in critical condition.
The driver of the county van was also taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was in the van at the time of the crash.
