Drivers want to put the brakes on a proposal to raise parking meter fees in Montclair.
This week, the Montclair Parking Authority delayed a vote to increase rates from 50 cents an hour to 75 cents or $1 at some locations. Local merchants are also against the plan, saying their customers are always in a rush to feed the meter.
The parking authority says it is considering raising meter fees, in part, to pay for a newly built parking deck. However, officials say they make most of their revenue, 60 percent, from the sale of parking permits. Many drivers also complain about the permits, which sell for $180 for six months.
