It's been a Brooklyn tradition for more than a decade—Dreamland Roller Disco has brought thousands of New Yorkers to Prospect Park for themed skate nights under the stars, but now the roller disco party’s future is uncertain.
"Dreamland is a magical experience,” said Lola Star, Dreamland Roller Disco’s founder. “It's a group of really diverse eclectic individuals that come together every Friday night to just experience joy on the dance floor."
In March, Prospect Park Alliance welcomed a new operator—Ekstein Development Group. In May, Star says she was assured her Friday night programming would continue.
"Then the person's assistant called me and offered us a drastic reduction in what we'd been paid previously,” Star explained. “So I told them that's not right and that's when they came back to me and said, 'You know what, we're looking at other performers,' and that's just not the way a community space should be operating."
The Prospect Park Alliance declined to go on camera but said it is shifting to a rotating model at the rink.
It sent News 12 the following statement:
“Prospect Park Alliance is excited about the changes we are making at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside, which has served as a cherished community destination for over a decade. Our approach includes new operators for the recreational amenities and for the cafe, as well as the appointment of new Alliance staff positions: a LeFrak Center Director and an on-site team that will oversee operations and ensure an excellent visitor experience. We also have been addressing wear-and-tear at this heavily used facility, including renovations to the Splash Pad, restrooms and lighting on site. These efforts have been informed by feedback we have received from the community.
Following a competitive request-for-proposal process, the Alliance has selected new operators for the LeFrak Center and its cafe: Ekstein Development Group and Purslane, respectively. Ekstein is a local company with a strong track record of running rinks, including City Ice Pavilion and World Ice Arena in Queens, and brings a deep passion for skating and engaging local communities. Purslane, part of the Oberon Group, is known for their thoughtful, seasonal food, and also partners with the Alliance at the historic Prospect Park Boathouse, where it operates the Purslane Cafe.
Prospect Park Alliance is committed to continuing roller disco at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside. We are excited to be partnering with Ekstein Development Group, which has more than a decade-long track record of operating local rinks, both World Ice and City Ice Pavilion in Queens, and brings a deep passion for skating and engaging local communities. Our goal in working with our new operator was to make certain that all our past programming partners were connected with our new operator, while enabling our operator to engage with new stakeholders to broaden the scope and constituents served by the Center. Our goal for Roller Disco is to work with a range of producers on a rotating schedule of Roller Disco events. This community-focused approach will enable us to support a broad range of Roller Disco lovers rather than centering on one voice or audience. Our focus has been and continues to be to provide an enriching, community-focused approach to our programming.”
Star says she is not asking for exclusivity.
"There is so much opportunity to bring in a huge array of diverse roller-skating performers, and I advocate for that,” said Star. “I think that is incredible and amazing, something that doesn't hasn't been done in the past and should be done moving forward. I want to keep our current schedule without reducing it. I'm a struggling local small business owner. I want to keep the same rate at least that we've been getting for the past 11 years. I employ a lot of performers and creatives. I want to be able to give them the same rate that they've been getting."
Dreamland isn't giving up. Star says she plans on launching a petition to rally support, hoping to keep her Friday night skates rolling for a 12th season.
"I'm going to fight to keep Dreamland in our home at the Lefrak Center in Prospect Park, and if for some reason that doesn't work out, I believe that I'll find a new space and I'll be able to keep that magic alive,” Star said.
For now, the Prospect Park Alliance says Ekstein is finalizing plans with other promoters and will announce this season's lineup soon.
News 12 also reached out to Ekstein Development Group, but has not heard back.
