(04/07/06) DOVER ? Taxi drivers in Dover marched in front of City Hall Friday, one day after police shut down four of the five taxi companies in town.
Town officials say the cabs were taken off the road because they had fraudulent insurance documents. The 100 drivers affected by the shutdown say the town is not being fair and is taking money out of their pockets. Since the four companies are owned and operated by Latinos, the taxi drivers feel they are the victims of discrimination.
Dover?s mayor claims there is absolutely no merit to the discrimination claims. According to the mayor, the shutdown is in the best interest of public safety. A lawyer representing the cab companies is in court trying to get the drivers back to work as soon as possible.
