The New Jersey Department of Transportation says that the Route 71 Bridge that connects Belmar and Avon-By-The-Sea is expected to reopen by May 31.
The department says that the bridge needs to undergo rigorous testing before it can return to normal operating status. The testing is expected to begin next Tuesday and will take about three days.
The bridge has been closed to drivers for several months – stuck in the up position to accommodate boat traffic.
A free shuttle bus between the two towns will continue to operation 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
