Work continues 24/7 on I-80 East in Wharton after discovering a sinkhole-related issue several weeks ago.

Now, a total of 90 locations near the original issue in the roadway have been identified for assessment and mitigation according to New Jersey Department of Transportation officials.

Crews have used advanced scanning, testing, remote sensing technology, and geophysical testing.

They hope to develop a picture of what the earth looks like underneath the road to determine if there are further voids, which they define as an empty space or actual sinkholes that already exist.

The DOT says two drill rigs are working 24 hours a day but it's a time-consuming process as it requires the operator to drill down and fill the shaft with grout.

That firms up the base of the road, which is done when the grout spreads into any existing voids.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 43 locations have been drilled, and 31 have been filled with grout.
