Delta Airlines is looking into how an 8-year-old Pomeranian died on a flight from Phoenix to Newark.
The dog, named Alejandro, died on a flight last week. It had a layover in Detroit and was being held in a cargo facility.
An attorney for the dog’s owner says that the dog’s blanket was stained with blood. It sparked a police response.
“I want to know what happened here. Why is there blood on this blanket?” asks attorney Evan Oshan.
Owner Michael Dellegrazie says that he has lost a member of his family.
“That’s exactly what happened and someone has to be responsible for it,” he says.
A spokesperson for Delta released a statement that says in part, "We know pets are an important member of the family and we are focused on the well-being of all animals we transport…As part of that review, we want to find out more about why this may have occurred to ensure it doesn't happen again."
This is the latest in a series of pet mishaps on airplanes this year. United Airlines dealt with three pet incidents in one week in March.
