An Englewood police officer is still fighting for his life Thursday after his motorcycle collided with a van.
The incident occurred Monday night when Officer Doug Menist was riding his motorcycle in response to a robbery report. The robbery turned out to be a false alarm.
Authorities say Menist?s motorcycle collided with a van on Van Nostrant Avenue. According to police, Menist flew into a pole and a tree before landing unconscious on the ground.
Doctors say Menist is lucky to be alive after the accident. They attribute his good health and athleticism to his ability to fight injuries.
According to doctors, Menist suffers from hemorrhaging in his brain, broken ribs, broken shoulders, punctured and collapsed lungs and a ruptured spleen. Many doctors are optimistic that Menist will survive, though they say his road to recovery will be a long one.
Menist still faces numerous possible surgeries. Doctors are slowly taking him out of his medically induced coma as he regains consciousness.
Meanwhile, the driver of the van was given two summonses for failing to yield and reckless driving.
