All motor vehicle offices in the state will be closed two days this year as part of Gov. Jon Corzine's plan to cut costs with state employee furloughs.
All DMV offices will be shut May 18 and June 15. Workers will take the days off without pay.
A spokesperson says all offices will be closed the same day so as not to confuse motorists. An alternative could have been made to close some offices certain days while keeping others open for operation.
"We thought it would be simpler and easier for our customers to just have two well publicized days off ? so you just have one day out of 30 and don't have to worry about which office is open and which is closed," says Mike Horan, of the Motor Vehicle Commission.
Since licenses and registrations expire at the end of the month, putting the furloughs in the middle could be less disruptive to motorist's lives. Inspection stations are exempt from Corzine's furlough plan, as they are run by private contractors.
