The Department of Education announced Thursday that it is stopping the evening class program for Bronx and city high school students.
Education officials say low enrollment is one of the reasons to stop the program. Another reason was to give individual schools the freedom to design a program to better address its students. The new programs will take place in the hours right before or after the school day.
The evening class program was not the same as night school. Evening classes were only open to students who were at least 16 or in their junior or senior years of high school. They were also for full-time students who needed to take extra courses to meet graduation requirements.
