Democrat Nellie Pou defeated Republican Billy Prempeh in New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

Pou won the seat that was vacated by longtime Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., who died this past August.

She was leading the vote count with more than 123,000 votes. Prempeh previously said he would contest the results if he wasn’t the winner.

“I think we will contest the results just based off of the discrepancies that I'm seeing here. I'm seeing an odd change in the numbers, so I think it's worth clarifying for the people,” he said.

Pou is a longtime state legislator, serving in the New Jersey Assembly from 1997 to 2011, and then the state Senate from 2011 until now.

Pou issued a statement on her Facebook page following the win.

"I’m honored to be elected as New Jersey’s next 9th District Congresswoman! Thank you to my neighbors and everyone who believed in me. As the first Latina to represent this district, I vow to fight tirelessly for our shared values and a fair future for all. Thank you, North Jersey!" she wrote.
