A deck collapse in Long Beach Island Tuesday morning left seven renters from the Hamilton Square area injured.
Police say the second-floor deck on an East Bay Terrace home in Ship Bottom plunged about 12 feet onto a lower deck.
?When it went down, they were watching friends kayak in the bay here,? Ship Bottom Police Chief Paul Sharkey said. ?When the weight went down, they all tumbled on each other and obviously it was quite scary for those guys.?
The entire single-family home has now been declared structurally unsound. The owner of the property, The Tannersville Inn, is a popular restaurant and bar in the Poconos area of Pennsylvania. Sharkey says the condition and age of the deck are being evaluated to determine if the owner was negligent.
Investigators are also probing to find out if underage drinking played a role in the collapse.
A 19-year-old male was air lifted to a trauma center in Atlantic City with head injuries after the collapse. There is no word on his condition.
