Patients at Brookdale Hospital are sounding the alarm on life-threatening issues caused by a cybersecurity attack on the hospital’s network.
Patients rallied outside the hospital Thursday, claiming the breach affected hospital communications with pharmacies and caused a delay in prescriptions. The issue has been going on for weeks at several hospitals, including Kingsbrook and Interfaith hospitals. Rallying patients say they have had enough.
Back in late November, One Brooklyn Health announced it experienced a cybersecurity incident resulting in a network disruption. Following the attack, the organization notified the police and took several systems offline in an effort to contain the attack. One Brooklyn Health is working with the Department of Health to try and pinpoint the problem. While it says hospital staff is working with the help of third-party advisors, One Brooklyn Health admitted this attack has a direct impact on patient care.
One Brooklyn Health said in a statement, "Our hospitals and facilities are open. We are working toward reducing our reliance on downtime procedures by deploying additional technologies and reactivating aspects of our network.”
One Brooklyn Health was able to get its pharmacy system back up Wednesday.
The cause of the cyberattack is still under investigation, and the network is still unsure what patient information, if any, was leaked.
It is also unclear when the systems at these hospitals will fully be back up and running.
