Crews in Hoboken fixed a six inch water main that sent water flowing through a street.
Police had Observer Highway between Madison and Monroe streets blocked off for the repairs.
Veolia Water says two apartment buildings with roughly 48 units were without water but service was restored around 6 a.m.
"Surprised, I guess we didn't have water last night. Which I didn't know," said Sara Schultz of Hoboken. "There are always problems with the water here."
The water company is looking into the cause of the break.
Chris Halleron at Veolia North America says," If there was a formula for water main breaks we would have it down by now. There are a lot of factors that go into it. This one it's probably age and wear. I don't see weather as being a factor this is what it is."
In the meantime, the City of Hoboken says planned construction and road closures on nearby Jersey Avenue in Hoboken and Jersey City have been canceled but expected to start again tomorrow.
