Cresskill Mayor Benedict Romeo died this week at the age of 77, borough officials said.
“Mayor Romeo served our borough for 25 years with honor, pride and devotion,” officials wrote in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies and condolence to his children and grandchildren.”
A cause of death was not provided.
Romeo’s death comes on the heels of the death of another longtime New Jersey mayor. Tinton Falls Mayor Vito Perillo died at the age of 100. He was said to be America’s oldest active mayor at the time of his death.
