Crash on New Jersey Turnpike sends debris onto Elizabeth street below

The Elizabeth mayor says the roadway may still be closed Tuesday morning.

A crash on the New Jersey Turnpike Monday night sent debris onto an Elizabeth roadway below.

The crash happened near Elizabeth Avenue and Fourth Street in Elizabeth.

Details of the crash were not provided. Photos Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage posted on social media show two large concrete slabs fell off the Turnpike overpass and onto Elizabeth Avenue.

“It is possible that Elizabeth Ave. will be closed at 4th Street in the morning. We are currently waiting assessment from the Turnpike engineers, and will keep everyone posted,” Bollwage wrote.

It was not clear if anyone was hurt in the crash. Elizabeth officials say that no one was hurt by the debris.
