The number of COVID-19 cases in New Jersey is rising, along with the rate of transmission.
Gov. Phil Murphy has not said if he would reinstate any pandemic-related restrictions. But other states and cities are going back – including nearby Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is only 30 miles from Trenton, New Jersey’s capital city. Philadelphia health officials are now strongly suggesting that masks be worn when inside, even among those who are vaccinated against the virus.
Murphy has said that he is not ready to reinstate a mask mandate in New Jersey, but he said he won’t rule it out either.
The biggest concern is in public places such as malls, grocery stores and restraints – areas where it is not possible to know if someone has received the vaccine.
The delta variant of the virus is spreading quickly among those who are unvaccinated. It is causing the case numbers of the virus to rise in New Jersey and around the United States.
New Jersey reported 750 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, along with 356 hospitalizations. The rate of transmission has risen to 1.4.
News 12 New Jersey spoke to some New Jersey residents about the issue. Mallika Khuon of Hamilton says that she is telling her family to keep their masks on, even though they are vaccinated.
"Even though you go the shot, put on the mask, protect yourself. You don't know who's not getting a shot out there,” she says.
But not everyone is prepared to start wearing masks again. Trenton resident Julian Whitten is unvaccinated and says that he is not concerned for his own health.
"I feel like this whole COVID thing is like a fluke anyway. But I don't wear my mask anywhere, period," he says.
The delta variant is much more contagious and aggressive. In Florida, the seven-day average of new cases is 6,492. Florida Gov. Ron Desantis has changed his tune telling his people the vaccines work.
"These vaccines make it so that your chances of survival are pretty darn close to 100%," Desantis says.
Some hospitals around the country are once again reaching capacity. Federal health officials suggest that anyone who is unvaccinated should still wear a mask.
