A City Council member is pushing a plan he says will improve the safety of volunteer police officers in the Bronx and the rest of the city.Councilman David Weprin (D-NYC) developed the Auxiliary Officer Assistance Plan with more than two dozen auxiliary officers. The plan includes requests for protective equipment such as bulletproof vests, mace and masks. Currently, officers have nightsticks and handcuffs, but are not armed and do not get vests.The plan would increase the penalties for anyone who attacks an auxiliary officer and set aside benefits for disabled officers and their families. Weprin's plan also calls for a comprehensive review of the entire program.The safety of auxiliary officers has been questioned since two were shot to death in Greenwich Village earlier this month.
