The future of Fort Monmouth took center stage in Governor Jon Corzine?s (D-NJ) visit to Lincroft Wednesday.
The Base Realignment and Closure Commission chose to close the base two years ago. Since then, the future of the base has been up for discussion. At an open event Corzine presented several initiatives he hopes to put in place for the base and took questions from the public about his plan.
Corzine says while there isn?t a master plan yet, it is being worked on. He hopes to get New Jersey?s academic institutions involved in creating a master plan, job retraining for those losing their positions at the base, and something he referred to as tech reserve.
Fort Monmouth is scheduled to be closed in 2011. Corzine admits creating a plan for the base is a complicated idea that will take a lot of work, but believes it is very much worth exploring.
