Police officers allegedly shot a pit bull to death in the Bronx Sunday and injured themselves in the process, leaving the owners outraged over the death and the mess left in their apartment.

The dog?s two teenage owners say police officers were walking around their building at 480 Concord Ave. about midnight when their dog wandered out to protect them. The owners say the dog bit one of the officers and they grabbed the dog back into their apartment. The owners say cops then kicked down their door and shot the animal 25 times. Three officers were injured by bullets ricocheting off the ground.

The tenants escaped the barrage of bullets by climbing onto their fire escape to a neighbor's apartment. They claim they found their apartment and computer destroyed when they returned. The owners also say they can?t bury their beloved pet, which many neighbors describe as friendly, because the officers took the dog as evidence.

The officers were not seriously injured in the incident. Police would not comment on the allegations. The dog owners are considering whether to take action against the NYPD.
