Controversial facial recognition technology debate held at City Hall

The debate over the use of facial recognition technology in New York City businesses took place in City Hall on Friday.
Council members discussed how privately owned businesses are using facial recognition technology in a public oversight hearing.
Advocates and some lawmakers have criticized the technology after it became public that MSG Entertainment, which owns the Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall, was using facial recognition to block access to lawyers from firms that are involved in lawsuits against MSG.
In January, state lawmakers called on MSG owner James Dolan to stop using the technology to target fans and to provide the state with clearer insight into how the company is using the technology for security.
MSG has repeatedly defended its use of the technology, but critics say venues should not have the power to weaponize facial recognition to discriminate against patrons.
