Congressman Frank Pallone called on the National Park Service on Tuesday to abandon a proposal to increase fees at Gateway National Recreation Area, including Monmouth County's Sandy Hook.
The proposal would increase parking fees $5 to $20 per vehicle, according to the National Park Service. Season passes will increase to $100 per vehicle. Oversized vehicles would pay $50 per day or $200 a season under the proposal.
Pallone says he wants to know where funds from the proposed increase would be spent. He's calling on the NPS to hold a public hearing on the matter.
The NPS says it has used the fee money for several projects at Sandy Hook in the past, including paving, rehabilitating campgrounds and beachfront monitoring.
In 2012, daily fees went up to $15 at Sandy Hook.
