Rail commuters from New Jersey into NYC rejoice!
The first ride across the new Portal North Bridge over the Hackensack River will take place this afternoon.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill, NJ Transit President & CEO Kris Kolluri and many others will take part in this inaugural ride after an afternoon news conference inside Newark Penn Station.
Commuters have been adjusting this past month as work continued to get the new bridge ready.
They’ve been grabbing the PATH, buses or a ferry after only getting as far as Hoboken, but today’s ride will celebrate the first cutover from the existing 116-year-old Portal Bridge to the new Portal Bridge.
