A coalition of Bronx and city Hispanic church members united against a federal bill aimed at strengthening immigration laws. Immigrants and supporters marched together across the Brooklyn Bridge to 26 Federal Plaza Saturday. New York State Senator Ruben Diaz (D-32nd District) organized the rally. He claims the proposed law will make criminals out of anyone who helps undocumented immigrants. The Senate Judiciary Committee amended the bill to protect church and charitable groups from disciplinary action for helping undocumented workers. The committee?s version of the bill would give citizenship to illegal immigrants under certain conditions, including paying a fine and learning English.
