The first day of Kwanzaa, the holiday celebrating African-American heritage, began Tuesday in the Bronx and around the nation with the close of Christmas.

The seven-day, non-religious holiday dates back 40 years. Kwanzaa is celebrated by giving gifts and feasting. More importantly, the holiday emphasizes seven principles ? some of which include unity, self determination, cooperative economics, creativity and faith. The principles are observed by lighting seven candles.

Kwanzaa participants say while the holiday is largely about African-American culture, anyone can celebrate it.
