An early Monday morning fire in Hamilton could have ended in tragedy if not for the help of a 18-month-old boy.

Denise Barker, mother of child hero Sammy and 4-year-old Alyssa, knew something was not right when her son stood at the top of their staircase and began to cry. The family says everyone in the home was asleep when the fire started.

Barker says that Sammy?s screaming was able to wake up the house, including his grandparents. All made it out unharmed.

Investigators suppose faulty equipment may have caused the fire. The Red Cross and neighbors have aided the family with food, clothing and shelter.
