A ceiling partially collapsed at Lake Drive School in Mountain Lakes late Tuesday morning, prompting an evacuation and temporarily displacing students. No injuries were reported.
A portion of the second-floor main hallway ceiling collapsed around 11:30 a.m., according to Brad Siegel, superintendent of the Mountain Lakes School District. First responders evacuated students and staff to a designated emergency relocation site.
Beginning Wednesday, Lake Drive students were temporarily relocated to other schools within the district while officials assessed the damage, Siegel said.
Lake Drive School serves students in pre-K through eighth grade who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The cause of the collapse and the full extent of the damage remain under investigation. School officials have not provided a timeline for students and staff to return to the building.
Officers from the Mountain Lakes, Boonton and Boonton Township police departments, along with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, assisted with the evacuation and relocation, according to Mountain Lakes police.
Following the evacuation, the Mountain Lakes Fire Department, the construction official and district administrators remained at the scene to assess the damage.
