The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 145 people across 17 states have been diagnosed with cyclosporiasis after becoming sick between May 1 and June 16.

Ten of those cases could be in New Jersey.

Health officials say all of the reported cases were linked to food eaten in the United States, and those who got sick did not report traveling in the two weeks before their illness.

Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic illness and typically sees an increase in cases during the spring and summer months. The CDC says 20 people have been hospitalized this season, but no deaths have been reported. Symptoms include nausea, bloating, cramping and fatigue about a week after eating something contaminated.

People who became sick ranged in age from 5 to 86 years old. The CDC, along with state and federal health officials, is investigating several multistate clusters to identify the food sources responsible for the illnesses.

Health officials say the actual number of cases is likely higher because some people recover without seeking medical care or being tested.

Washing produce and your hands can help reduce the risk of illness. If you think you may have this disease, go to the doctor.
