A new arts venue officially opened Saturday in Middlesex County with the hope that it will provide a boost to the local economy.
Gov. Phil Murphy joined a group celebrating the grand opening of the Carteret Performing Arts & Events Center.
The $50 million venue on Washington Street is part of an up and coming arts district. It was built on the site of a former Vaudeville-era theater.
The rock band Smithereens, who are Carteret natives, are headlining tonight's performance.
The borough is hoping its 1,600 removable theater seats will give it the flexibility to also host sporting events, festivals, trade shows and more.
