Car thieves would face stricter penalties under proposed Holmdel Township ordinance

Police in Holmdel Township are proposing some new ordinances that would make it harder for people to steal cars in the community.
A recent uptick in vehicle thefts has led to the proposal of new rules that would prohibit certain criminal behaviors, and even some technology.
If adopted, the plan could mean new penalties for people caught peering into a window of a motor vehicle that they do not own or have license/privilege to possess.
People would also be prohibited from pulling a door handle or taking other actions in an attempt to unlock a motor vehicle unless they're the owner.
Perhaps most significantly is a new proposal to outlaw the types of electronic devices that are capable of detecting key fobs nearby.
