First there was the movie “Almost Famous.” Now, the story has been made into a Broadway musical.
The book and lyrics are written by Cameron Crowe who won an Oscar for writing the film's screenplay.
“Almost Famous” is loosely based on Crowe’s own life. As a teenager, Crowe traveled with a rock ‘n’ roll band and wrote about it for "Rolling Stone."
The movie came out more than 20 years ago but was not a commercial success at the time.
"I think we had to wait for people to see the movie, which bombed in the theaters. Over time, they started to fall in love with ‘Almost Famous,’" says Crowe.
Crowe has written and directed the films “Jerry McGuire,” “Vanilla Sky,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” among many others. But he says “Almost Famous” is personal.
"It's super emotional and I have got to admit I cry a little, at least a little every night and I’m here for every show,” Crowe says.
“Almost Famous” is now in previews at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre with a Nov. 3 opening scheduled.
