Health officials are warning Camden County residents to keep their pets supervised after a raccoon tested positive for rabies following a backyard altercation with a dog.
The Camden County Department of Health and Human Services was notified on Aug. 26 by the state Public Health & Environmental Laboratories that a raccoon collected in Barrington was rabid.
The incident began on Aug. 22, when a resident’s dog encountered the wild animal in its backyard. The Barrington animal control officer picked up the raccoon and arranged for testing in Trenton. State health officials confirmed there were no known human exposures tied to the case.
The dog’s owner provided proof of prior vaccination to county officials. The pet has since received a required rabies booster shot and will remain under confinement and observation for 45 days.
The county commissioner reminds pet owners to keep their animals’ vaccinations current, supervise pets outdoors and avoid handling wild or unfamiliar animals. Any bites or scratches from wild animals should be evaluated by a medical professional or veterinarian immediately.
