Bronx straphangers could soon be seeing slower service and more crowded bus and subway trains if the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) gets approval for its proposed cuts.

According to a New York Times report, the MTA is proposing $20 million cuts in bus and subway service for next year. MTA officials say the cuts are a necessary evil because a $1 billion deficit looms in the next few years. If the cuts were approved, travelers would wait an extra five minutes during off-peak hours. During evening and late night service, trains and buses would run every 10 to 20 minutes.

The New York City Transit Board is the group that is considering the cuts. The head of the committee that oversees New York City Transit told the Times that he is opposed to the measure. He says service cuts are not needed during this time when ridership is up and trains are already crowded.
