Starting Sunday, Bronx residents who drink while operating a boat will face stiffer penalties. Officials say longer jail sentences and higher fines are part of the new law. Bronx boaters who are found guilty of steering their boats under the influence of alcohol could spend a year in jail. The fine for boating while intoxicated has doubled, from $500 to $1,000.Supporters of the new law say 28 percent of all fatal boating accidents in 2004 were alcohol related.
