For many people celebrating the Fourth of July includes fireworks, but Bronx residents are being told to leave the sparklers and rockets to the professionals. The New York Police Department is reminding residents that fireworks are illegal. Officials say anyone found with fireworks could go to jail, face fines and have their vehicle confiscated. They claim officers will be keeping a close eye on highways, bridges and tunnels over the weekend to try and keep fireworks out of the borough. In addition to being illegal, fireworks can also be dangerous. Doctors say even though some fireworks like sparklers seem harmless, they burn at very high temperatures and can burn through clothing and skin very quickly. Hospital officials add that fireworks injure many people each year. The injuries usually involve eyes and hands which doctors say can be difficult to fix and heal. Officials recommend attending a fireworks display put on by professionals like Macy?s annual July Fourth extravaganza.
