A school bus driver has pleaded guilty in a crash last year that killed a teacher and a fifth grade student from Paramus.

Hudy Muldrow Sr., 79, pleaded guilty Monday in Morristown to reckless vehicular homicide, assault by auto and child endangerment. Prosecutors agreed to recommend a 10-year sentence as part of a plea agreement that included the dismissal of 20 additional charges of assault by auto.

Muldrow was charged following the May 2018 crash on Interstate 80 in Mount Olive. Social studies teacher Jennifer Williamson-Kennedy and 10-year-old Miranda Vargas were killed and dozens of children injured.

Authorities say that Muldrow attempted to make an illegal U-turn on the highway after taking the wrong exit while transporting the children on a field trip. A dump truck struck the bus, causing it to turn over on its side.

The crash led to state legislation to require seat belts on school buses and changes to how school bus drivers’ driving records are reviewed.

Muldrow is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 6.
