Brooklyn filmmaker spotlights LGBTQ+ stories, explores queer identities

News 12 is highlighting a Brooklyn woman who's reshaping the film industry with her films that explore queer identities.
Heather María Ács is taking the film industry by storm as an award-winning writer and director committed to telling LGBTQ+ stories.
"I'm here making this work because I feel like I'm not seeing my queer underground communities represented," Ács says.
For more than two decades, the Brooklyn-based filmmaker has made it her mission to create work that shows her community in a positive light.
"I just want there to be something on TV that my friends can come home and watch and that's light and fun. That they're not watching something with a queer character that's traumatizing and that they can have that to fuel all the everyday lives that they're living," she adds.
She released her first short film "Flush" just four years ago, and she's now gearing up to release her latest film "Flourish." Ács says she makes an effort to ensure her films are inclusive and representative of the LGBTQ+ community so her audience can feel seen and heard.
The filmmaker is hoping to redefine the film industry and create a platform for queer and radical communities to thrive.
