Bronx volunteers come together for community cleanup in Pelham Bay

Community members, students and local leaders rolled up their sleeves to help beautify parts of the Bronx on National Cleanup Day on Saturday.
Volunteers gathered at Pelham Bay Little League, where they set out to pick up trash, pull weeds and clear debris from the surrounding neighborhood.
The cleanup brought together students from Lehman and Cardinal Spellman high schools, members of the community and State Sen. Nathalia Fernandez’s office.
After spending hours cleaning near the Little League, volunteers learned about another area in need of attention near a local American Legion post. Organizers said garbage had accumulated beneath leaves and overgrowth, which prompted the group to extend its cleanup efforts.
Volunteers spent several more hours clearing the area before crews from the city Department of Sanitation arrived to help remove the remaining debris.
Organizers said they were proud of what the volunteers accomplished and hope the effort encourages neighbors to help keep the streets clean.
They are also calling for more public garbage cans throughout the neighborhood. They say easier access to trash receptacles could help prevent litter from building up again.
