The crew of the Jamaica, a Brielle-based fishing and party boat, had an exciting visitor on Saturday morning.
A large whale shark was seen swimming near the ship during a tuna fishing trip in the Hudson Canyon.
The crew said the fish swam close to the boat for around 45 minutes.
Captain Erik Bogan shared video in a Facebook post showing the shark side-by-side with the boat.
Sightings like this are rare, the crew said, but they have seen whale sharks before in the area.
Whale sharks, despite the name, are not a type of whale, according to the crew. They are the world's largest species of fish.
