An early morning fire in Bridgewater destroyed an apartment, forcing two residents and a pet out of their home.
The fire started at an upstairs corner apartment Tuesday at the Mt. Pleasant Villas on East Main Street, according to Deputy Fire Chief Chris Fernandez.
Officials say the two people who lived at the apartment were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to a local hospital. The pet was taken to a local veterinarian. They are expected to be OK.
Fernandez says there was an electric bike inside the apartment, but it was not yet clear if its battery sparked the flames.
Most of the damage was contained to the one apartment as officials say firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other apartments. However, some other residents are displaced due to water-related damage.
Officials are assessing which apartments will have to be condemned. The Red Cross is assisting with temporary necessities.
