A brick facade suddenly collapsed on Nelson Avenue at Grace
Street in Jersey City.
The bricks crashed down
onto the front sidewalk, bringing down power lines with them. Nobody was walking in front
of the building at the time, and there were no injuries reported.
“Upper section of the
brick face fell from the frame part of the building and toppled down, took out
the awning and took out the electrical service to 141 and 143 Nelson Ave.,”
says Battalion Chief Rich Gorman.
A mother and her baby were
upstairs in their apartment when the collapse happened. They were taken to safety
when firefighters arrived.
Electricity was knocked out for a couple of blocks initially but restored
quickly. The
cause is not known at this time.
