A boiler explosion at St. Mary?s Hospital in Passaic forced the evacuation of patients and shut down the facility Saturday.
Hospital officials say the explosion happened about 2:40 a.m., causing the building to lose power. Hospital staff, EMS workers, firefighters and others helped evacuate the almost 80 patients to nearby St. Joseph?s Hospital in Paterson. Some St. Mary?s employees went to St. Joseph?s to assist with the influx of patients, while others will be out of work until the facility reopens.
Authorities say no one was injured, but the hospital is expected to remain closed until the middle of next week.
