A boater from Toms River saved seven people whose boat sank off Green Island Thursday in Barnegat Bay, officials say.
Mark Nigro says he saw only a few feet of the boat sticking up out of the water and didn't notice the people until he got close.
He threw a line and pulled a family from Mantoloking and their friends aboard his own boat, aiding them until state police arrived.
"If you're out on the water boating long enough, you're going to need help or be in a position to help somebody," Nigro says. "It was just dumb luck that I happened to be there at the right time."
The victims' newly purchased, high-performance catamaran was towed to a marina in Lavallette.
No injuries were reported, police say.
